Is there a venture capital association in my state or province? Nineteen associations, across sixteen states, provinces and regions. Every one was checked against its own website on a stated date, and the ones that could not be confirmed are named as such rather than quietly dropped.

These are the least documented bodies in the industry. Only four of the nineteen publish a founding year anywhere public, and the acronym IVCA is shared by Illinois and Iowa — and by two more associations outside North America.

This list is part of The Global Directory of Private Capital Associations, a free reference work covering one hundred eight bodies worldwide — every association, in every region, on one page.

What the published lists get wrong

  • Only four of the nineteen publish a founding year on their own site. For the rest, the year the association was established — the most basic fact about an organization — is not recorded anywhere public.
  • The National Venture Capital Association's regional groups page lists the Council for Entrepreneurial Development under the heading ‘Nevada’. It is based in North Carolina; its own domain reads cednc.org. Corrected here.
  • That same page links the Greater Nashville Private Capital Association to gncpa.org, transposing two letters, so the link does not resolve. The association's actual domain is gnpca.org.
  • IVCA belongs to two of these associations at once — Illinois and Iowa — and to two more outside North America. Searching the acronym alone lands a reader in the wrong state, or on the wrong continent.

What the directory adds

The answers above tell you an association exists and roughly what it covers. They do not tell you whether it is worth your time. The directory records, for each of the one hundred eight bodies it covers, the legal form, the membership base, whether it publishes market data, what it convenes, whether members are listed publicly, and who may join — including whether firms based outside the jurisdiction are eligible. Every entry carries the date it was checked.

Corrections are welcome, and free

If your association is listed and something is wrong — or if it is missing altogether — tell us. Corrections carry no obligation of any kind and are folded into the following edition.
